Crafty Creative

I come from a long line of creative people, and am pretty creative myself. Many would call us crafty, though I’m not sure if that refers to our creativity with being able to get things done or because we enjoy creative artistic endeavours. Either way, I’ll take it.

One of my great grandfathers was a pirate during prohibition, running rum from Jamaica to Newfoundland. His ship was bombed in the Atlantic and he spent time in prison in Spain. After he died my great grandmother took over the rum running business to provide for her children. That was 1934. Can you imagine? That same industrious woman won a blue ribbon for a needlepoint at the 1967 world’s fair in Montreal. That’s pretty cool. I wish I had a picture of that. Maybe I will find one during the process of working on my family tree. I sure wish I was able to meet her as an adult. The stories she could tell.

In addition to the pirate and blue ribbon winner, my ancestors included farmers, fisherman, builders, a pianist, a law professor, and an actual artist. One of my brothers is an amazing wood worker. People search him out and pay good quid to have his work in their homes. My other brother, an amazingly creative brick layer, is also an artist, horror writer, and occasional tattoo designer. My Mom has always knitted and now that she’s retired to the mountains that is how she earns an income. She has items in gift shops and museums, and hopefully I can rope her in to contributing to a new project with me this spring.

Most of my female ancestors were crafters of some sort; knitting, quilting, sewing, general arts & crafts. I can knit but quilting has eluded me this far, as has the art of crochet. I received 100% on my art final exam in high school but really can’t draw or paint at all. I’m good at copying and embellishing. I write some (um, hello!), but I also make jewelry and things. I enjoy that creative process after spending my days working with numbers and calculations. And when words fail me I can always sit at my table and make something beautiful.

Maybe you think you aren’t creative. Think again. There are many things I would consider creative that don’t have anything to do with writing or art in a conventional sense. Are you a great cook or baker? Do you have a garden full of colourful flowers? Maybe you paint your nails or slay your makeup application. Do people compliment you on your home? Your clothes? Maybe you touch people with the music you play. Can you come out of a grocery store with five bags full when I only get two bags with the same amount of money? Don’t underestimate your creative talents.
